Reconciliation Day is coming in 2018

Chris Bourke

CHRIS Bourke says the ACT Government will work with the community to establish a Reconciliation Day in 2018.

In tabling the Reconciliation Day Public Holiday consultation report in the ACT Legislative Assembly Chris noted significant community support for a Reconciliation Day in Canberra.

“Today, we have made a significant step in progressing the work of reconciliation in the ACT,” Chris said.

“I am confident that Reconciliation Day will be embraced by Canberrans as an opportunity to reflect upon Reconciliation as well as to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and history – our collective Canberran identity.

“The ACT Government has also committed to marking the 50th Anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, and the 25th Anniversary of the Mabo Ruling, with significant public events.

“Next year provides us as a community with an opportunity to commemorate these two important milestones in a very proud, very public way.

“Following the commemorations we will undertake in 2017, the ACT Government will establish a Reconciliation Day from 2018. This will serve as a yearly reminder of the commitment our community makes to building a better relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians – a relationship that addresses the unfinished business of our history and draws all Australians into the oldest living culture in the world.”
