Roller Derby seeks its future stars

YOUNG people of the Canberra region aged 10-17 will be able to join Canberra’s newest roller derby team in May as Varsity Derby League (VDL) holds two registration days for juniors on Sunday May 1 and 8 at Queanbeyan High School.

VDL’s junior roller derby team will be a competitive team with regular game opportunities at home and in other regions.

“We are really excited to be able to bring this opportunity to Canberra’s young people, in keeping with our spirit of inclusiveness,” said VDL’s President Jessica Rabid (AKA Jessica Robinson).

“They will be a part of Canberra’s first full junior roller derby team, and will even help decide the team name and uniforms.

“These registration sessions are for those with little to no skating or roller derby experience – they’ll be learning all the skating and safety skills they need at training this term from experienced coaches.

“More advanced skaters can join us a little later in the year.

“Potential skaters will be able to try roller skating for themselves at the registration sessions – they will need their own mouth guard but some other equipment is available to borrow if needed.”

Go to varsityderbyleague.com for full details on the registration sessions and to RSVP to borrow skate equipment.
