Shane tweaks the rules on retirement villages

Shane Rattenbury

SHANE Rattenbury says that following a review of the retirement villages legislation he has introduced a significant reform package to enhance the operation of retirement villages for residents, families and operators.

“The review found that the Retirement Villages Act 2012 is generally working well, but that a few minor amendments would enhance business operations, help with internal disputes and benefit both residents and operators,” Shane said.

Mr Rattenbury today tabled a report on the review of the Retirement Villages Act 2012, together with the Retirement Villages Amendment Bill 2016.

The proposed amendments are in response to recommendations in the review and include:

  • a new internal dispute resolution process for residents and operators;
  • a simpler and more consultative budget approval process with greater resident input; and
  • more binding deposit arrangements for entry into retirement villages to reduce financial loss for operators.

“We had an incredible response to the review from the Canberra community,” Shane said.

“I believe we’ve put together a balanced set of recommendations, which will help the Act continue to meet the needs of residents, their families and village operators.

“This review was a truly consultative process. I would like to thank the review advisory group for contributing their time and expertise.

“The review advisory group included representatives of the ACT Retirement Village Residents’ Association, ACT Property Council Retirement Living Committee, Aged and Community Services Australia Association of ACT and NSW, Human Rights Commission, Law Society, Council on the Ageing, Canberra Multicultural Community Forum and LGBTIQ Ministerial Advisory Council.”
