Stanhope to patronise the aboretum

SHANE Rattenbury has announced the appointment of Jon Stanhope as the inaugural patron of the National Arboretum Canberra.

“Our former Chief Minister, Jon Stanhope, deserves much credit for having the vision to so passionately pursue the National Arboretum project during his time in the Legislative Assembly,” Shane said.

“There is no doubt the Arboretum has become one of Canberra’s key attractions, with visitation increasing by over 20% last year to more than half a million people from all over the world.

“It is highly appropriate that Jon be appointed as the patron of the Arboretum as it reaches an important step in its future development as a national asset, tourism attraction and place of research and education.

“As a passionate advocate for the Arboretum and Canberra more generally, Jon will be able to actively engage with people across all levels of the community.

“The voluntary position will see Jon promote the Arboretum’s vision and masterplan as well as communicate awareness and understanding of the Arboretum’s purpose and role as a unique, world class institution.

“Jon will work to encourage greater understanding of this great arboretum which includes rare, endangered and symbolic trees across its 250 hectares and to promote the venue as one of the great meeting places in Canberra. It will be similar to his current role as patron of the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust.

“He will also work with key stakeholders at the Arboretum including the Friends of the National Arboretum and the Foundation and help to promote programs, activities and facilities at the centre.

“In effect, Jon will be a voluntary roving ambassador for the Arboretum and I look forward to seeing the extra awareness and visitation and engagement he creates.

“I would like to congratulate Mr Stanhope on his appointment to this important position, and look forward to seeing the Arboretum mature as one of the most popular tourist attractions in Canberra.”

Mr Rattenbury said nominations are currently also being sought for the newly created National Arboretum Canberra Foundation’s Board of Directors. Nominations for the Director positions close on Friday 12 February 2016. For more information about the National Arboretum Canberra Foundation Limited please visit www.nationalarboretum.act.gov.au
