What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than looking for ants on Mount Majura?

valentine ant

YOU could find the love of your life this Valentine’s Day at a special guided activity searching for the valentine ant on Mount Majura.

“Ant walks are a popular activity each year and Sunday afternoon, from 4 pm to 5.30 pm, will be an opportunity to visit the Mount Majura Nature Reserve and be guided around the area searching for ants,” ACT Parks and Conservation Service Director, Daniel Iglesias, said.

“The Friends of Mount Majura ant walk will be hosted by ant specialist Dr Ajay Narendra, Australian Research Council Future Fellow from Macquarie University. Dr Narendra will show there are more to ants than meets the eye including, just for Valentine’s Day, a search for the valentine ant. This ant has an abdomen in the shape of a heart and will be one of the varieties seen during the tour.

“Ant explorers can also learn how the jack jumper ant searches for food in a unique way. It jumps in the air to capture its prey.

“This community activity may provide an opportunity to make new friends and perhaps even find your own special Valentine with one couple meeting on an ant tour some years ago.”

Bookings are not required for the ant walk and cost will be a gold coin donation. The group will meet at the entrance to Mount Majura Nature Reserve, at Helms Place, Hackett. Bring along a magnifying lens, sun protection and covered shoes.
