Winners in 2016 Matt Withers Australian Music Composition Competition

WINNERS have been announced for the 2016 Matt Withers Australian Music Composition Competition.

This competition, cash & prizes are valued at over $3,000, was founded by Canberra classical guitarist and member of Guitar Trek, Matt Withers. It   was open to all Australians to submit a work for solo guitar based on the inspiration artwork “Forest” (pictured) by Sue Needham. With thanks to many generous sponsors, the.

This year, Withers tells “Citynews,” the standard of all entries from across Australia was very high and the variety of works and compositional techniques based on Needham’s artwork was “great to see”.

The winning works will be performed at a special concert “Music with a View’ in the National Arboretum, Canberra on Sunday November 13 at 1:30pm. Ticket price includes afternoon tea and refreshments catered by Ginger Catering. Book now at www.TryBooking.com/MPXI.

The world premiere performance of a new work by Dr Robert Davidson will also be performed in this exciting concert, a commission made possible with the support of Bill McIntyre, Libby Hewson and Sydney’s Guitar Passion.

The winners are below:

First Place ($1000) & Emerging Composer U25 award ($250) sponsored by Matt Withers wen tot James Mountain (Melbourne) for “Between Tall Trees.”

Second Place ($500) sponsored by Canberra Classical Guitar Society went to Kirsten Milenko (Sydney) for “à l’aube.”

Third Place ($250) sponsored by Rick Falkiner Guitar Centre went to Mitchell Newton (Blue Mountains) for “Forest.”
