Arts / Canberra innovation on parade

THE second event in the “5 x 5 ACT Speaker Series”, being staged this year by the Design Institute of Australia, features five designers from five disciplines who will have five minutes each to share what makes them tick.

The evening is open to the public and anyone fascinated with Canberra innovation and creativity. This time, the round features a contemporary jeweller working on a new collection designed around Canberra’s architecture, a graphic designer who recently graduated with top honours while battling a serious immune disease, a fine furniture maker who is a national award winner, an exhibition designer and a glass artist.

Timothy Fulton is a graphic designer who works for Canberra’s “Swell” Design Group. In 2016, he was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disease that affects one in 500,000. Life came to a standstill for Timothy but he’s now back on his feet and has completed his studies at the University of Canberra, which awarded him a Chancellor’s Commendation and the student prize for Best Graduating Undergraduate in the Faculty of Arts and Design.

Then there’s Sabine Pagan, a Swiss-born Australian contemporary jeweller, gemologist and academic, who is working on a collection of pieces celebrating Canberra.

The other speakers are furniture designer and maker Rolf Barfoed, exhibition designer at Designcraft Philip Quartly and renowned glass artist Jeremy Lepisto.

The Design Institute is the voice of professional design in Australia and this year it turns 70 years of age.

The evening will about be about “inspiring people to value design, promote Australian design and connect designers with others,” says Lisa Biddiscombe, president of the ACT branch.
