Arts in the City / Gallery gets real, hyper real

CANBERRA has always been strong on arts clashes and now, hot on the heels of last week’s news about “A Night in Hyperreality” during the “HYPERactive” exhibition at Canberra Contemporary Art Space comes an invitation from NGA to the launch of its summer blockbuster – “Hyper Real”, which the gallery promises will chart the evolution of hyperrealism from the early ’70s through to the 21st century. “Hyper Real” will feature the work of 30 ground-breaking artists who amplify the understanding of humanity through sculptural, kinetic, biological, digital and virtual reality representations of the human body.

OLIVER Levi-Malouf, a former Daramalan College student and prizewinning visual artist who now studies at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, has directed a timely YouTube film called “Dear Future Me – LGBT Youth Share Their Dreams” that profiles five gay youths’ positive hopes and dreams for the future.

JAZZ in Concert at the Village returns with local piano identities Wayne Kelly and Hugh Barrett playing tributes to Thelonious Monk, accompanied by Ben O’Loghlin on bass and Andrew Dickeson on drums at the ANU Pop-up Village, 7.30pm, Wednesday, September 6. Bookings to gpage40@bigpond.net.au

IN “Dreamers of the Day”, The Song Company will take audiences on a dream-like musical journey that will challenge their awareness of time, tempo and rhythm. At The Street Theatre, 7pm, Friday, September 8. Bookings to thestreet.org.au or 6247 1223.

Choreographer James Batchelor… off to Italy and France.

CANBERRA-raised choreographer James Batchelor and his collaborators are touring their show “Deepspace” to the Motion Festival at Bassano del Grappa, Italy; Plastique Danse Flore at Versailles and Casino Luxembourg’s Forum d’art Contemporain/Trois CL. His company will also be in residence at Theatre National de Chaillot in Paris.

SUNDAY, September 3 is rich with music:

  • CLASSICAL guitarist Matt Withers will showcase his new album, “Songs of Yesterday”, at Lerida Estate Winery, Federal Highway, Lake George, 12.30-3pm. Bookings to 4848 0231.
  • MOMENTUM Ensemble, powered by the Australian Youth Orchestra, will perform a free concert at the High Court at 1.30pm. Registration to hcourt.gov.au
  • BLOCK Sounds recorder ensemble, directed by Robyn Mellor with Olivia Gossip, Elana Leske and Shae Leske, will perform its debut concert, “Waves in the Air,” at All Saints Anglican Church, Ainslie, 2.30pm, tickets at the door.
  • SOPRANO Julia Wee sings famous Jessye Norman songs, African-American spirituals and Lieder by Mahler and Strauss, with Lucus Allerton on piano, for Art Song at Wesley Music Centre, 3pm. Tickets only at the door.
  • MARUKI Community Orchestra presents two works by Mendelssohn at Albert Hall, 3pm. Bookings to marukicommunityorchestra.org.au or at the door.
