Arts in the City / Stratton’s salute to Japanese filmmaker

SUPER film critic David Stratton and the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia are celebrating 20th century Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa with “Essential Kurosawa: selected by David Stratton”, a two-week season of his most famous films. It opens on June 14 with restoration of the 1985 classic “Ran”, based on “King Lear”, then Stratton will be in town for the final-night screening of “Rashomon” on June 30. GLASS artist Matthew Curtis works out of his Queanbeyan studio, but his work can be seen worldwide from the Palm Springs Museum in California to the Sir Elton John collection in England. He has an intriguing exhibition in Sydney that shows off an approach to glass that is minimalist and mathematical. At Sabbia Gallery, Glenmore Road, Paddington, until June 17.

LIMESTONE Consort and Adhoc Baroque will be honouring the memory of German composer Georg Philipp Telemann by performing baroque works and two of his solo cantatas, “Hemmet den Eifer” and “Nach Finsternis und Todesschatten”. All Saints, 9-15 Cowper Street, Ainslie, 2pm, Saturday, June 11. Free, but an exit donation would be appreciated.

BELCONNEN Arts Centre and Tuggeranong arts centres have launched a program supported by ACT Health called “Dance for Wellbeing”. Led by Philip Piggin, Jane Ingall, Gretel Burgess, Debora di Centa and Jacqui Simmonds, it will provide dance programs for people challenged by Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or multiple sclerosis.
