Arts / ‘Talk Blak’ CD goes public

“TALK Blak – Take Two” is a hip hop music program that’s been running in Civic this year, and this weekend the creators are launching a CD.

Community inclusion officer at Belconnen Arts Centre, Ann McMahon, has been working with Michael Weir and Priya Chandra, who facilitated the program through Street University, a Ted Noffs Foundation initiative.

Aimed at developing participants’ song writing, stage presence and performance, it was specifically targeted towards Indigenous and new migrants, but “Talk Blak” was open to everyone, especially to ages around 15-25.

In partnership with The Ted Noffs Foundation Street University in 2016-17, participants were given the opportunity to take part in a follow-on program focused on research, song writing, performance and production skills and industry knowledge.

As well, regular focus sessions were complemented by opportunities for cultural exchange with local Indigenous elders and other representative organisations.

Now, as a result, the 20-track “Talk Blak Radio Take Two” album, mixed and mastered by Gary Famui, also of Street University, is ready to face the public.

To launch the CD and celebrate the achievements of the “Talk Blak” team, Belconnen Arts Centre is hosting a launch event with live music and a chance to talk with the artists and their mentors.

Performances by Creekside and Ani Ani (Anania Esayas) sit alongside other artists featured on the CD – Myronizinfektiuos, Cappo, Trey Goodsell, Darkrose, Ikenna Enji, Priya and Aysha Chandra, Ikenna Enji, The Wumpaz, Salale, Koebi and Kashia Famui.

Creekside members Micca (Ryan Micallef), Kaz (Zachary Woodhill), Raja Enz (Zane Fajri), SsJonn (John Aitsi) and Papuadij (Tyson Powell) have been participating in the program since it was established, but in fact hip hop brought them together much earlier when they were at high school together in Weston Creek.

“Talk Blak : Take Two” CD launch, at  Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen, 3pm Sunday, August 27, all welcome. The CD is now available for sale from the Arts Centre.
