Canberra Hospital staff prevent fire from spreading

STAFF in the kitchen at The Canberra Hospital prevented the spread of a fire this morning after a deep fryer caught alight.

Fire crews were alerted to the incident at 9.31am and shortly after arrived to find a deep fryer alight in the main kitchen of the hospital at Garran.

Kitchen staff had covered the appliance with a fire blanket and evacuated the area.

Fire crews are now waiting for the fryer to cool down before they completely extinguish the fire.

ACT Fire & Rescue commander Steve Gibbs says: “Staff did a great job. They followed their emergency procedure and help prevent the fire from spreading to other areas of the kitchen.”

“Staff have been allowed back into the kitchen to ensure food service to patients is not interrupted.”
