‘Chris the Sheep’ featured in new book

“The Misadventures of Chris the Sheep” was inspired by the international news sensation, “Chris the Sheep”.
INSPIRED by international news sensation “Chris the Sheep”, the children’s book “The Misadventures of Chris the Sheep”, written by RSPCA ACT CEO Tammy Ven Dange, will be released with a launch at the National Museum of Australia on September 28.

After requesting help from the public to find a shearer, “Chris the Sheep” became an international news sensation overnight and even broke a Guinness World Record in the process.

Under the guidance of RSPCA ACT veterinarians, 41.1 kilograms of wool was sheared from Chris, setting a new record by over 12 kilograms.

Now, two years later, Ms Ven Dange will read the story about before “Chris the Sheep” was taken in, and show the artwork featured in the book, which was created by local artist Kylie Fogarty.

“We were overwhelmed with the interest in Chris’ story over the last two years, and a few people asked if we would ever write a book,” Ms Ven Dange says.

“Given our bigger plans for an education program, it made sense for us to make this a children’s book. After all, what kid wouldn’t enjoy a story about a cheeky sheep and his animal mates?

“We still get asked the same questions. ‘How did he manage to avoid feral foxes and dogs?’, ‘How did he go unnoticed for so long?’, ‘Why did his wool continue to grow?’”

The book takes a fun approach to what Chris would have gone through and at the same time teaches children about animals in our community.

All proceeds from the sale of the book will support RSPCA ACT’s work including its new education program to be launched this financial year.

Senior National Museum curator Martha Sear says: “We are delighted to revisit the remarkable tale of Chris the Sheep.”

“Chris’s massive fleece is one of the Museum’s most popular objects and helps us tell the story of wool and its importance in Australia’s history and economy,” she says.

“The Misadventures of Chris the Sheep” RSPCA ACT Book Launch, National Museum of Australia, 10.30am, September 28.
