Update: Crews continue to fight Hume fire

AFTER being alerted to a structure fire in Hume, ACT Fire & Rescue are now at the scene. 

Crews were notified of the incident on Alderson Place at 11.07am.

 

Update: 11.47am

FIRE crews are undertaking defensive firefighting at what is believed to be a recycling facility.

The structure is approximately 35 metres by 45 metres in size.

As a precaution an ambulance is at the site of the fire.

Smoke from the fire is becoming visible in nearby suburbs including over the border in Jerrabomberra and Queanbeyan.

 

Update: 12.12pm

FIRE crews continue to work on bringing the fire under control and have protected the perimeter of the property to ensure the fire doesn’t spread to adjoining buildings.

The Health Directorate advises that people with asthma, other chronic respiratory and/or chronic cardiac diseases should not perform vigorous exercise and should stay inside if affected by the smoke. People with asthma in particular should continue their medication and consult their general practitioner if they have any difficulties.

 

Update: 12.30pm

THE fire is now contained to within the building and the roof structure is still stable.

Firefighters have cut holes in the roof to allow for ventilation of the fire.

Fire crews continue fighting the blaze from outside the property.

 

Update 1.02pm

FIRE crews have now entered the building and have commenced offensive firefighting.

The surrounding buildings including self storage facilities and a local electricity sub station are at no threat from the fire.

Firefighters expect to remain on scene for several hours.

Monitoring of the smoke is showing it is now dispersing.

 

Update: 1.34pm

THE fire has been knocked down with crews moving through the building to extinguish any hot spots.

ACT Policing is on scene managing local traffic and road closures. Alderson Place in Hume is closed until further notice.
