Important airbag recall shouldn’t be ignored

CANBERRA drivers are being urged to check if their vehicle is a make and model affected by a safety recall of potentially unsafe airbags made by Japanese manufacturer, Takata.

Since 2009, more than 2.3 million vehicles in Australia are subject to the recall including makes such as BMW, Chrysler, Dodge, Honda, Jeep, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota.

Access Canberra director of Community, Business and Transport Regulation Craig Simmons says at this time it is not known how many vehicles in the ACT may be affected.

“This is an important safety recall and one that should not be ignored,” he says.

“We know that affected airbags have lead to some catastrophic outcomes, including fatalities following accidents. Over time the airbags can degrade, again increasing the risk.

“If you have received a letter from your car’s manufacturer or retailer asking you to have your car’s airbag replaced, act on it as a priority.”
