Man extradited to face historic child-sex charges

A 31-year-old man will appear at court in Queanbeyan today after being extradited from the ACT on historic alleged child sex offences committed on children known to him.

In 2006, AFP investigators, following reports a child had been shown child-abuse material, seized a computer during a search warrant at the man’s ACT home. A referral was made to NSW Police Force to investigate child-abuse material located on the computer, which had its origin in NSW.

On March 10, 2008, NSW detectives arrested and charged the then 21-year-old man. with 19 offences, including aggravated indecent assault and production of child abuse material, relating to offences involving two children, aged 10 and 12.

After allegedly failing to appear for court appearances in 2010, a warrant was issued for the man’s arrest.

He was arrested by ACT police on Friday (December 8) and appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court.

Detectives from the NSW State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad applied for and were granted the man’s extradition.

He was formally refused bail at the Queanbeyan Local Court, and ordered to re-appear there today (December 12).

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate sexually-based offences and crimes against children, including sexual assault, online exploitation, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.

Anyone with concerns about suspected child abuse or exploitation should call 1800 333 000 or via nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/
