Moore to retire from public health role

“CITYNEWS” political columnist Michael Moore is to retire from his day job as CEO of the Public Health Association Australia (PHAA).

Michael Moore… retiring
Moore, who is considered one of the most respected national leaders in public health, has been with the PHAA since 2008. He will leave the organisation at the end of March. He is also president of the World Federation of Public Health Associations and will complete his two-year tenure in May.

PHAA president David Templeman says: “Michael has been a political champion for society’s most underprivileged, from his progressive stance towards drug law reform as an MLA and as ACT Health Minister, to his strong commitment as PHAA CEO to having the social determinants of health recognised by Australian policymakers. This dedication to protecting the health and wellbeing of vulnerable population groups is testament to Michael’s fearlessness in tackling the difficult health issues, as well as his deep kindness and compassion.”

Moore has long been one of Australia’s most prominent public health advocates, starting from his time as an independent member of the ACT Legislative Assembly in 1989 and then serving as Australia’s first independent minister when he was appointed as ACT Minister of Health and Community Care in 1998. He has similarly been a significant contributor to the field in his academic roles as an adjunct professor with the University of Canberra and as a visiting professor at the University of Technology Sydney. He was honoured for his major contribution to the protection of health this year when he was made a Member of the Order of Australia.
