STUDENTS and a lecturer were assaulted by an 18-year-old man wielding a baseball bat during a class at the ANU this morning.
Shortly after 9am, the student stood from his seat with a baseball bat and approached the lecturer at the front of the class. Other students intervened and attempted to restrain the assailant. During the incident four people were assaulted, one male and three females, including the lecturer.
Campus security detained the student until police arrived.
The ambulance service treated four people for sustained, non-life-threatening injuries before taking them to Canberra Hospital.
Police took the man into custody and say there is no known ongoing threat to public safety. The man is not known to police or intelligence agencies. Police say it is too early to determine the motivation behind the assaults.
