BY eating biscotti and singing Italian songs Yarralumla Primary School begun its own “festa” this morning to celebrate “Festa della Repubblica”, Italy’s national holiday that commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946.
It was during that year that Italian people voted to replace its king with a president, who was to be chosen democratically by the citizens of a new Italian republic with a new parliament.
As a bilingual school, Yarralumla Primary has been celebrating Italy’s national republic day since 2009 and began this year’s celebrations with a ceremony, which spoke of the importance and beauty of Italian culture.
The school’s Italian cultural leader Maestra Sharon Brissoni says throughout the day the children will do a range of activities based on Italian art and culture.
But what the students look forward to the most is the choices between pizza and Italian treats for their morning tea.
