RANGING from a Hanami party to a springtime dreamtime scenario, voters can choose between six design options, which have been shortlisted for a new micro park in Garema Place.

The public vote will be open until September 6 to select the submission that will transition Garema Place from blueprint to reality.

Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris says: “Last month we put out the call for the community to submit design ideas for a transportable micro park in Garema Place and we received 14 submissions from individuals, families and local landscape designers…”

“The jury had a tough decision to make, but they have shortlisted the submissions received to six and it is now up to you to decide the winner,” she says.

The six shortlisted design ideas:

  • The Grounds of Garema sets the scene with a micro amphitheatre, community piano, picnic tables and umbrellas;
  • Hakanasa, a grove of sculptural wattle trees is a Canberra celebration of Hanami;
  • Springtime Dreamtime brightly illuminates blue trees, fun flower chairs that rotate and tilt, strings of lights strung between trees and brightly painted pavers;
  • Green Square is based on modularised planting beds set at varying levels and incorporates seating options for individual and small group use;
  • Angles features elevated grass platforms and a timber “wave” deck; and
  • Round features grassed platforms and a small performance space.

TCCS staff will be in Garema Place on Friday, September 1 between 2.30pm and 4.30pm to collect community votes.

“The most popular design will be developed and constructed by a landscape architect, in consultation with the person or group who made the submission,” Ms Fitzharris says.

“Construction of the micro park is expected to commence in November 2017 and will be delivered in time for summer and the school holidays.”
