Arts / An ‘uneasy mix’ wins drawing prize

Marie Hagerty, who is pictured in the middle, receives first prize.
THE 2018 Barton Estate Drawing Prize was unveiled on the weekend at Strathnairn’s Woolshed Gallery, with Marie Hagerty and Iona Walsh announced as winners of the non-acquisitive awards.

The awards, which are supported by Barton Estate, the family owned producer of premium cool climate Canberra District wines, was open to all artists (except undergraduate students) in all media, with no theme stipulated and to be presented in A3 format.

“Plane Girl” by Marie Hagerty
Judges Nancy Sever, David Broker and Meg Buchanan chose Hagerty’s marker, gouache and resin on paper work, “Plane Girl”, for the first prize of $4000. The work depicts the “womanplane”, an uneasy mix of female pilot and bomber plane.

Walsh’s graphite on paper artwork “Gathering X” won the second prize of $1000. Taken from a recent group of drawings, which investigate graphic mark-making and pencil point signatures, Walsh’s work explores “the mutability of edges, textured tonal transitions, and the visual tussle between defined and dissolved boundaries”.
