“PIN8” is ANCA Gallery’s eighth fun exhibition where contemporary artists, designers, craft practitioners and makers of all disciplines showcase miniature, wearable artwork – in the brooch form. The exhibition will feature artists such as sculptors, printmakers, painters, ceramicists, silversmiths, machine-makers, photographers, wood workers and glass artists. At ANCA, 1 Rosevear Place, Dickson, Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm -5pm, until July 15.

THE natural beauty of the ACT and surrounds is the focus in two new exhibitions opening at Tuggeranong Arts Centre. “Traversing Tidbinbilla” features artists Ruby Berry, Holly Grace, Melinda Heal and Sally Mumford, who all took part in Craft ACT’s inaugural Spring Residency at Cinerea Cottage in Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in 2017.

IN “Abstractions”, renowned local photographer Martin Ollman describes his work as “very much a spur-of-the-moment style of photography”. He says finding order or beauty is the challenge. “Abstractions” will be opened by CraftACT CEO Rachel Coghlan at Tuggeranong Arts Centre, 6pm, Friday, July 6. Both exhibitions continue until Saturday, July 28.

THE Barton Estate Drawing Prize, judged by Nancy Sever, David Broker and Meg Buchanan, runs at Strathnairn’s Woolshed Gallery from July 5 to August 12. Official opening and prize presentation, 2pm, Saturday, July 7.

M16 ARTSPACE has five new exhibitions this week: “Singular Archivists”, which features works by Llewellyn McGarry, Deirdre Pearce, Isobel Rayson, Alison Moeller and Kate McCambridge; “Nexus” has paintings by Brian Hincksman; “Project Reflect”, features acrylics by Allison Jonas Young; “Amalgam”, highlights work on canvas by Phil Alldis; and in Chute Space, “We Can Change The World”, illustrates mixed media by Tilley Davey. PHOTOACCESS invites artists and curators at all stages of their careers to submit applications to showcase contemporary photo-based art in the Huw Davies Gallery in 2019. Applications must be submitted to photoaccess.org.au by 5pm, Tuesday, July 31.

CRAFTACT: Craft and Design Centre has two new exhibitions opening this Thursday, July 5, at 6pm. The first, “Macrocosmia”, features large?scale sculptural works by glass artist Elizabeth Kelly. Then in the “Bench” workshop is “mark making” works by contemporary jewellers Nellie Peoples, Clare Poppi, Andy Lowrie and Katie Stormont. The head of gold and silver smithing at ANU, Rohan Nicol, will open the exhibition at 6pm, Thursday, July 5. But floor talks with artists Nellie Peoples, Clare Poppi and Katie Stormonth will be beforehand at 5.30pm, Thursday, July 5. Both exhibitions run until August 25.

THE ACT Textile Arts Association is presenting a new exhibition at The Q, with new creations in clothing, wall decorations, clothing accessories and all things textile-related such as mixed media works as well as a display of pin cushions and letters of the alphabet. There will be a grand bazaar selling clothing, accessories, gift ware and household wares too. At The Q, Queanbeyan, 6pm, July 4 to July 14, 10am-4pm each week day and Saturdays from 10am.

“DRAWN to Beauty” is Olga Read’s first solo exhibition, and will feature oil and watercolour paintings capturing the beauty in everyday things, incorporating portraiture, still life and landscapes. The exhibition opens at Stirato Gallery, 21/1 Iron Knob Street, Fyshwick, from 2pm-5pm, Saturday, July 7, but runs from July 4-2. 

IN October, Bungendore Wood Works will be staging the third Australian wide Studio Furniture exhibition created in partnership with Australian Wood Review Magazine. THE Old Bus Depot Markets are showcasing the region’s most talented textile artists in the annual “Creative Fibre” event this Sunday when it will highlight stallholders who have a range of fabrics as their specialties. NGA’s “winter film series” continues with a provocative film about the art market, “Maurizio Cattelan: Be right back”. Cattelan is the man who shocked the Catholic Church with his wax effigy of Pope John Paul II struck by a meteorite and staged a fake Biennale in in the Caribbean. AN exhibition by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community corrections clients and Alexander Maconochie Centre detainees has opened at Community Services #1 Gallery, 63 Boolimba Crescent, Narrabundah, as part of NAIDOC Week. Most of the works will be on sale to the public, with proceeds going towards supporting the artists’ rehabilitation and assisting them to reintegrate into the community.
