Stephen Harrison’s entry, ‘Rumours of War’, bronze with patina

THE ACT Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects is partnering with the National Gallery of Australia on Wednesdays throughout September for the Contemporary Australian Architects Speaker Series. This week, the speaker will be Dillon Kombumerri, who is the principal architect of the NSW Government Architects Office. At James O Fairfax Theatre, 6pm (doors open 5.30pm) Wednesday, September 19. THE art of Ikebana will be on show in a workshop with Sogetsu Ikebana teacher Alexander Evans from “HanaKuma”, who will use spring blooms and foliage popular with the Calthorpe family. QUEANBEYAN Art Society’s 12th Annual Art Show is coming up in City Walk with 700 viewers a day expected through the 50-metre art marquee, and this year there’ll also be an art market between the merry-go-round and the fountain. The opening begins at 1pm on Saturday, September 22, and it runs until Monday, October 1.

‘Death of Cook’ by John Carter
CAPTAIN James Cook was a very complex man and the National Library is paying tribute to him in its new summer show, “Cook and the Pacific”, at National Library of Australia, September 22 to February 10. The exhibition is free and no bookings are required.

“CÉZANNE – Portraits of a Life” is a documentary written and filmed by Phil Grabsky in The National Portrait Gallery London, the Musée D’orsay in Paris and the National Gallery Of Art in Washington. PHOTOACCESS presents “Subliminal”, a group exhibition showcasing works by the 2017 and 2018 Personal Photography Project participants. The exhibition will feature works by Michelle Crosbie, Jacqui Doyle, Tessa Ivison, Adam Luckhurst, Andrew Mooney, Amanda Summons, Philippa Tetlow, Annie Wilcox, Mark Will and Grant Winkler. At Huw Davies Gallery, Manuka Arts Centre, Griffith, until September 30. Patrons can have their photograph taken by Summons, who will be in the gallery from 12pm-4pm on Sunday, September 23.

MEGALO staff and members will be printing up a storm across its studios in its 2018 open day. There will be prints on sale, demos, food, drink, and fun. At 21 Wentworth Avenue, Kingston, 10am-4pm. All welcome.

NANCY Sever Gallery is presenting “Janenne Eaton: Shadowlands”, an exhibition of the work of one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, who says her studies and fieldwork in archaeology have continued to provide a conceptual foundation for her imagery. BELCONNEN Community Gallery presents this year’s International Tenants’ Day Exhibition, which features a mixed media exhibition by artists who rent their homes across Canberra. CAROL Cooke observes, draws and hand embroiders local birds, feathers and forest debris. She is showing 52 small works, one done every week during 2018. TEXTILES artists exhibiting in Craft ACT’s annual members show, “Place Makers”, will be giving a floor talk in the north building, on level 2, at 12.30pm, Saturday, September 22. All welcome and free. 

‘Sugar and Spice; we are related not by blood but by blood’, by Kieran Butler, 2017, inkjet print on cotton rag
“QUEEN Size” is artist Kieran Butler’s queer re-telling of the Dioscuri or Gemini myth using photography and drag’s shared properties of illusion, transformation and magic as a framework. The figures of Castor and Pollux are re-written as Sugar Boi and Spicey Boi, non-gendered twins. Performing at the opening on September 19 will be local artist, Venus Mantrap. THE Embroiderers’ Guild of the ACT will be holding its annual three-day exhibition at Albert Hall, Yarralumla, from Friday, September 21, to Sunday, September 23. There’ll be exhibits, a shop and cafe, workshops and demonstrations and a seminar at 2pm on Saturday about caring for textile pieces by Victoria Pearce of Endangered Heritage. Tickets at the venue. Children under 12 are free.
