The 2018 Australian National Eisteddfod Choirs competition will wind up on Saturday (August 18) night.

Kicking off from 7pm at Llewellyn Hall, the evening will feature six leading choirs from Canberra and Newcastle singing music in a wide variety of styles.

The event will cap off two days of enjoyable choral singing adjudicated by Jenny Mathers, a choral expert from Melbourne.

It will commence with the “open choral groups” section, which features smaller choirs of up to 15 members. Debacle Quartet will be followed by Lady’s Mantle and the ANU Chamber Choir singing wide and varied repertoire, from traditional arrangements of “Scarborough Fair” and “Waltzing Matilda” to “Autumn Song” and “Blow, Blow thou Winter Wind”.

The finale, Australian Open Choral Challenge has three entrants and the winner will receive $3000 and a trophy.

Brindabella Chorus, is a women’s barbershop chorus, which has been entertaining audiences with four part a capella harmony since 1991. Last year they won the title of 2018 Harmony Classic Div AA International Champions in Las Vegas.

Tomorrow the chorus will present four pieces arranged by their director, Glenda Lloyd, including “Shelter” and “Sweet Caroline”.

ANU Vocal Fry is an energetic group of 30 Canberra high school students directed by Tobias Cole, who love quality ensemble singing and are keen to develop their musical and performance skills. It will perform five pieces such as Henry Purcell’s “Come ye sons of Art” and with Aaron Copland’s “I bought me a Cat”.

The University of Newcastle’s Echology Chamber Choir will perform three contrasting Australian pieces. After opening with Ruth McCall’s arrangement of “Waltzing Matilda”, they will sing “Geography VI” by Paul Stanhope which put Michael Dransfield’s poems to music, and will close with Benjamin Lambert’s “Thunder”.

Other open age and championship sections will take place during the day, from 9am-6pm.

The Australian National Eisteddfod presents open choirs on Saturday August 18. Timetable and bookings at nationaleisteddfod.org.au or bookings to on 132 849, ticketek.com.au or at the door.
