NICK Milton will return from Germany to conduct the Canberra Symphony Orchestra through a French feast of music celebrating the hundredth anniversary year of Claude Debussy’s death. Sax virtuoso Nick Russoniello will perform Debussy’s “Rhapsody for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra”, then they’ll all perform a slap-up version of Ravel’s “Bolero” followed by Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique” and Milhaud’s “Scaramouche”. IN the lead-up to the Llewellyn concert and as part of the CSO recital series, Russoniello will also perform compositions by Telemann, CPE Bach, Britten, and his own work, including “Fox” (a tribute to Jimi Hendrix) at Wesley Uniting Church, Sunday, September 3. Artist Wendy Macklin’s “South Coast Summer” exhibition… Cooleman Court, August 24-26.

A POP-UP shop in Weston is the latest venue for an art show and sale of Wendy Macklin’s latest show of paintings with happy people and children and dogs having fun in the sun. “South Coast Summer” will be found at the bottom of the escalator, Cooleman Court, August 24-26 and all works are for sale.

Satirist Titus O’Reilly… at The Street, August 27.

THE Street Theatre will continue its flirtation with football and music when satirist Titus O’Reily appears in “Manifestly Inadequate”. NEWS from Canberra’s lively Griffyn Ensemble is that, in the wake of Science Week, it’ll be joining astronomer Fred Watson as part of the “Extended Play New Music” marathon at Angel Place City Recital Hall, Sydney, on August 25.

Avi Amesbury… solo exhibition in Mittagong until September 16.

ALSO further afield, former CraftACT chief Avi Amesbury has a new solo exhibition, “Country – Ancient Lands”, about places in Australia and sites in Israel, where she completed a six-week residency at the Benyamini Contemporary Ceramics Centre. At Sturt Gallery and Studios, Mittagong, until September 16.

AS part of a celebration of the long career of violinist and concertmaster Barbara Jane Gilby, a concert at Wesley will feature the Brahms and Mozart Clarinet Quintets, with Eloise Fisher on clarinet, Gilby and Pip Thompson on violin, Lucy Carrigy-Ryan on viola and Samuel Payne on cello, 3pm, Sunday, August 26.
