Arts / ‘The Furies’ on track for screen success

Writer/director of ‘Killer Instinct,’ Tony D’Aquino (left), on set with director of Photography, Garry Richards (right), at Bywong.
“The Furies” (formerly “Killer Instinct”), the first film produced by Canberra film studio The Film Distillery, started principal photography this week.

Written and directed by Tony D’Aquino, the feature is a horror film where a young woman faces her darkest fears with seven other unwilling participants in a deadly game.

Along the way, the film tackles universal themes of survival, revenge and redemption, and the hearts of darkness within us all.

The picture, being shot throughout April and May in Bywong, is the first of several projects from the “Accelerator POD” initiative involving The Film Distillery, Screen Canberra and sales agent Odin’s Eye Entertainment.

The Accelerator POD is a market-savvy development program where filmmakers submit scripts via Screen Canberra for appraisal by Odin’s Eye Entertainment, along with potential for a distribution deal. The Film Distillery then partners with creative teams and options their screenplays. The filmmakers are then provided with script-to-screen guidance with input from seasoned script editors and are teamed with professional producers.

For The Furies, the producer is Lisa Shaunessy of Arcadia, a former executive at both Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe’s production companies, working with Canberra producer, Christian Doran.

The ultimate aim is to build a sustainable film and TV production industry in Canberra and “The Furies” features a range of Canberra talent in the cast and crew, as well as actors and production staff from interstate.

The film’s executive producer Andy Marriott says, “There’s no reason why projects like this can’t be developed in the ACT on a regular basis” and CEO of Screen Canberra, Monica Penders, enthuses, “The industry is finally realising that filming here is unique, cost effective and, above all, easy.”

“The Furies” is due for release in December 2018.
