Arts / Marion Griffin honoured in lecture by the Lake

Marion Mahony Griffin
THE eighth Marion Mahony Griffin lecture is coming up this week at Canberra Girls Grammar School’s new Yhuuramulum Building on the lake.

The event, with its self-explanatory title, “Marion Mahony Griffin: in her own right”, will feature business and finance author and journalist Glenda Korporaal, who has worked in Sydney, Canberra, Washington, New York, London, Hong Kong and Singapore and has interviewed many of Australia’s top business executives.

She is expected to throw light on the American woman who changed Australian history as an architect, artist, environmentalist, social observer and community builder, in spite of having been constantly overshadowed by the famous men in her life, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and particularly her husband Walter Burley Griffin, with who she teamed up to win the design contest for the new Australian capital city, Canberra.

Initiated by the Walter Burley Griffin Society in 2009, the annual lecture attracts wide audiences. The society’s president Akky Van says, “Lectures have focused on particular facets of Marion’s personality, architectural career in the USA, Australia and India, creative works as architect, illustrator and graphic artist, passionate life interests and her marriage and partnership with Walter Burley Griffin.”

Korporaal will show how Mahony Griffin broke through barriers for women in architecture and spent 15 years working in Chicago for Lloyd Wright, in the formative years of the Prairie School of Architecture.

The eighth Marion Mahony Griffin lecture, Yhuuramulum Building, 43 Alexandrina Drive, Yarralumla Bay, Yarralumla, 7pm, Wednesday, July 25. Bookings to eventbrite.com.au
