Arts / Musical by kids, for kids, starring kids

A JOYOUS new musical will be on show this weekend at Tuggeranong Arts Centre, the result of six months’ hard work by a group talented local children.

Devised as part of Tuggeranong Arts Centre’s Community Arts and Cultural Development Program, “Just Like Clockwork: A Musical” was developed under the direction of Tim and Nathalie Bevitt by children aged between 7 and 13 years, who began work on the show in January.

The Arts Centre set up the development project in response to a need for affordable, accessible arts activity for children in the south of Canberra. And the project involved children from all backgrounds, many of who would not normally have access to this kind of program.

Director Tim (‘Mr Tim’) Bevitt says: “The format of the program has given us the space to create a place for the children to really shape and craft the story, characters and songs in a way that normally would be much more superficial.”

One of the benefits, he says, is that children have participated in the creation of a musical from the very start of the process to the finished product.

The children devised a plot that revolves around the curious (in more ways than one) inventor Alberta Clausius Thompson Morowitz and her philosophical snow leopard friend Morbid Redfrost as they join a motley crew of Questers drawn by trickery through a clock-faced portal into a decaying theme park.

Audiences can expect to see a cast of unicorns, talking pizzas, jumping jellybeans, a moustachioed dinosaur and even a “sentient” fart.

“Just Like Clockwork”, Tuggeranong Arts Centre, 6.30pm Friday, June 22 and 3pm Saturday, June 23. Bookings to trybooking.com
