Arts / Sparks fly between short film festival stars

AUSTRALIAN actors Alastair Osment and Emily Gruhl are among the artists travelling to Canberra for the Canberra Short Film Festival this week.

The pair star in the short film “The Bookshop” and met on-set of this romantic comedy and have since become a couple.

“It wasn’t long after filming that we began dating,” Osment says.

“We had so much fun on the shoot and there were definitely sparks flying.”

The film centres on a desperate writer (Osment) who tries to woo a publisher (Gruhl) in order to convince her to take on his manuscript. But perhaps his arrogance, and stupidity get in the way of something more real than a book deal.

Osment has been in TV productions such as “Top of the Lake: China Girl”, “Rake” and “Home and Away”, while Gruhl can be seen in the reimagining of “Picnic at Hanging Rock”, which is currently on Foxtel.

“The Bookshop” will also screen at Down Under Berlin Film Festival in Germany later this month and the Noosa International Film Festival in October, where it has been nominated for “Best Comedy”.
