CANBERRA’S Young Music Society has been awarded the 2018 Art Music Award for Excellence in Music Education at the national Art Music Awards in Melbourne.

As we reported recently, YMS’s nomination recognised 50 years of community youth music activity from a proud, self-funded, not-for-profit, community-based society, especially through its holiday programs and music-instrument hire.

YMS President Joan Dunn received the award from opera singer Debra Cheetham.

YMS artistic director and general manager Stephen Leek, told “CityNews”: “We were extremely honoured to have been singled out from a very strong pack of nominees and, are in a sense accepting this award on behalf of all the organisations in Australia that quietly work away behind the scenes without much support from governments and sponsors to offer quality and inspiring  music programs to Australia’s young people.”
