Damaging winds blowing up the dust

THE haze across Canberra is dust cause by wind, not smoke, says Emergency Services adding that a damaging wind warning is still in place, with wind speed averaging 50-60kph in urban areas, and peak gusts more than 90kph predicted for alpine areas.

The agency warns that from mid afternoon, damaging winds may also affect the remainder of the Snowy Mountains district and also parts of the Southern Tablelands, Illawarra and South Coast districts. This afternoon’s wind is expected to average 80-90kph with peak gusts in excess of 120kph likely for alpine areas over 1900 metres.

Winds are expected to ease later on Sunday.

ACT Fire & Rescue and the ACT State Emergency Service have responded to six requests for assistance across Canberra this morning, mostly involving fallen trees and roofs.

For assistance during storms and flood call 132500. For life-threatening emergencies call E000.
