Firefighters tackle blaze at National Gallery

FIREFIGHTERS are working to extinguish a small fire at the National Gallery on Bowen Drive in Barton.

The building has been evacuated.

UPDATE: 4.24pm

FIREFIGHTERS are currently cutting open the ducting to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.

The fire, which started because of a build-up of saw dust in a machine at the back of the gallery, is not-suspicious.

ACT Fire & Rescue is conducting atmospheric monitoring to ensure the area is safe and will shortly allow people back into the building.

Crews will remain on scene for about another hour.
