Man beats elderly woman in Batemans Bay

A MAN has been arrested after he allegedly approached an 84-year-old woman and repeatedly punched her in the head.

The man, 43, allegedly approached the woman at about 11.15am while she was sitting in her car in a car park on Perry Street. He then repeatedly punched her in the head, causing severe lacerations, before fleeing.

A member of the public, who heard the woman scream, chased the man and held him in a staircase while emergency services were contacted.

The man was taken to Batemans Bay Police Station where he is assisting with inquiries.

The woman has been taken to Batemans Bay Hospital and has since been transferred to Moruya Hospital for treatment.
