NSW Labor joins Barr’s commitment for a faster train

Chief Minister Andrew Barr
NSW Labor and the ACT government have committed $10 million to develop a business case for faster rail services between Sydney and Canberra.

NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley alongside Chief Minister Andrew Barr, announced their commitment today (August 1), with Mr Foley saying both ACT and NSW communities can benefit equally from a faster rail connection.

“If we can reduce rail journey times along the corridor then towns like Goulburn can truly grow as more people choose to live there and work in the region,” he says.

“The Liberal-National State Government has squandered hundreds of millions of dollars on blowouts on WestConnex and Sydney light rail and has starved the regions of the public transport infrastructure that is needed. Labor has the right priorities and it is in public transport.

“Faster rail is the obvious answer and Labor is committed to developing the business case so that we can get this long overdue project on the slate.”

Together, both Mr Barr and Mr Foley believe reducing the current journey time of four hours on the train between Sydney and Canberra would encourage tens of thousands of people to commute to those cities from towns such as Yass, Goulburn, the Southern Highlands and Wollondilly Shire.
