Plans to abolish chemotherapy co-payments

Health Minister Meegan Fitzharris

WORK is underway to have chemotherapy medication co-payments abolished by the end of July, says Minister for Health and Wellbeing Meegan Fitzharris.

Ms Fitzharris says she’s been talking to patients and their families about the financial hardship associated with cancer treatment.

“What we have heard is that at a time when ACT patients should be focused on their treatment, these costs can add an extra layer of burden on them and their families,” she says.

The estimated annual cost for this initiative is about $1 million.

When my late wife was being treated at Canberra Hospital around 2000 they tried to charge us a co-payment for chemo and when I disputed these charges they were found to be illegal under PBS agreements with the Federal government.
