Review: The Ages Of Love (M) ? ? ?

THIS Italian production tells a trio of love stories.

The first unfolds in that deliciously hazardous stage confronting young lovers deciding to convert cohabitation into commitment.
While his brunette significant other stays in Rome, a young lawyer’s firm sends him to persuade a family to sell the farm it has tended for 50 years. Developers want it for a golf course.
In the village, he meets a blonde of some speed. She reels him in like a fish. Then her husband comes home.
A middle-aged TV newsreader gets tangled with a dark-eyed beauty until the police tell him she has a reputation as a stalker. This story gets told in the manner of French farce. Only the French do French farce.
A widowered American academic is friends with the widowered Italian in the apartment on the floor below. The Italian’s spectacular daughter visits him for the first time since leaving a decade earlier to work in a Paris fashion atelier.
There’s a small porky going on here. After her father explodes when learns that actually she was working in the skin trade, the American gives her temporary shelter.
This story works best of the three. Writer/director Giovanni Veronese has written an effective screenplay in which Robert de Niro, grizzled and looking very good indeed, and Monica Bellucci as the daughter, build a relationship. Which they do, deftly, gently, making amends for what preceded them.
