[box]PHOTOGRAPHY “Architecture” By Nathan Lanham, at The Q, Queanbeyan, until July 17.[/box]
NATHAN Lanham, born in Gunning and by trade a chef, has been indulging a personal passion by photographing architecture and design-related images for more than seven years.
Now, armed with a CIT degree in photography, he is changing careers with his first solo exhibition at The Q this month, a way of introducing himself to the Canberra region public and presumably potential clients.
His enthusiasm for buildings has been fine-tuned visits to South Africa and to Europe, notably Barcelona. Now Lanham looks at forms in Australia’s buildings through 30 fine-art photographs where the pure beauty of line is his main concern.
While Canberra (a corner of the National Gallery, the top of City West car park) and Sydney images (the surreal Jasper Apartments) feature, it is Melbourne that has initially captured Lanham’s imagination, following a visit motivated by the wish to snap the Web Bridge in Docklands.
Federation Square, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art and Melbourne’s Custom House are all shown in crisp, mostly black and white images that show patterns extracted from the buildings, not the buildings themselves.
Lanham has thus transformed three-dimensional architecture into two-dimensional art. Visit www.nathanlanham.com
