A MOBILE phone application that tracks ACTION buses is currently in development. The application, is one part of a real-time information system that will give bus users instant information including the location of all ACTION buses and their estimated arrival times.
Information will also be accessible over the internet, touch-screen displays and digital displays at major bus stations and selected stops. The system is also expected to interface with traffic signals, to give buses priority and ensure on-time running. The ACT Government promised $12.5m from last year’s Budget for the project over the next three years.
Specifications for the design have already begun, with a request for tender for the supply, installation and on-going maintenance set for the end of this year. The Government said the installation of the system is expected for 2012 with full operation in 2013.
