April: Religion, schools and Kevin’s comeback

KEVIN Rudd is on the comeback trail in April. His official biographer Robert Macklin finds a changed man in the former Prime Minister – sharper, more aggresive and in command.

It’s also time to welcome new crew on boar – the newly elected MP for Canberra Gai Brodtmann kicks off her political career by offering free seminars to future entrepreneurs and Andrew Leigh, the new MP for Fraser, claims to be a community guy, and wants to engage the local community instead of keeping politics as an elite sport.

Politics should not be a party sport either, says commentator Michael Moore. he criticises the Electoral Act introduced by Attorney General Simon Corbell, and insists that the voters, not the party machines, should have a much greater say.

More often than not, politicians find themselves caught in a battle, rather than a sport. Haunted by a $30 million cash hole in revenue, ACT Treasurer Kate Gallagher is fighting to return the Territory to surplus by 2014-15.

Much crossfire comes from the debate over “Is there a place for religion in schools?” with Michael Moore’s “No” and Nick Jensen’s “Yes”, the question has created a stir among “CityNews” readers.

There is always a place for bravery and sacrifice in our education, though. A Canberra student is off to France on Anzac Day, to pay respects to a brave uncle who died on World War I’s western front.

For the time warp game, you don’t have to travel to France. “CityNews” finds you can easily get lost in time if you follow the signs in Commonwealth Park and Acton Park. Welcome to Canberra, and some long-gone attractions.
