Arts in the City: Arts czars promise big, bold forum

• NEWS has arrived that several of our arts czars (and czarinas) have formed a new voice, “The Childers Group”. Chief czar and chair Prof David Williams promises a big, bold public arts forum in 2012. More information at citynews.com.au

• SO, now it’s out. The Australian National Botanic Gardens, along with the Portrait Gallery, is facing budget cuts. Nonetheless the Gardens are pushing on with a new Draft Management Plan. Copies at 6250 9540 or www.anbg.gov.au/gardens

• ‘TIS the season for de-funding. The Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council has announced that it will defund the 40-year-old advocacy body Craft Australia, from December. Craft Australia has had a strong voice in the Australian Design Alliance, the National Visual Arts Craft Network, and the Council for Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. This is NOT the same body as Craft ACT, which is still thriving.

• YOU may have seen the photo last week of a glasswork given to “CityNews” Artist of the Year, Michael Le Grand, by Harriet Schwarzrock. Her work is on display at the Curtisglass Studio sale at 114 Uriarra Road, Queanbeyan, December 10, 10am-3pm. There’ll be glass-blowing demonstrations and a raffle for the Heart Foundation.

• THE Canberra band Lavers, described as a mix of The Beatles, The Who and Crowded House, are launching their debut EP, “The Street is a Symphony” at the ANU Bar on December 16. Local comedian Greg Kimball will be MC while Sydney Girls Choir and another Canberra band, Activate Jetpack are support acts.

• IT was such a full-on season launch at The Q that we couldn’t mention everything last week. So, there will also be indigenous singer-songwriter Shellie Morris, kids’ shows “The Gruffalo’s Child” and “I, Bunyip” as well as “Ladies’ Night”, NZ’s precursor to “The Full Monty”. • M16 Gallery at 21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith, never sleeps. It has two shows, “Seasick” by video artist Kate Vassallo and “Timescape” by painters Julie Brooke, Ella Whateley and Vanessa Barbay, running simultaneously, noon-5pm, Wednesday-Sunday, until December 18, with a floor talk at 11am, December 16.

• CANBERRA doctor-pianist Robert Schmidli will perform Liszt Funérailles and Beethoven Sonata Op 53 in C major “Waldstein” at the Wesley Music Centre’s “Lunchtime Live” series, 12.40pm-1.20pm, December 14. Cost $2 or paper-note entry.
