AWARD-winning author Hanifa Deen will discuss her book “The Jihad Seminar” in a special lecture at the ANU tomorrow.
Ms Deen’s book documented a case launched in 2002 by the Islamic Council of Victoria against Catch the Fires Ministry Inc under a new and controversial hate speech law.
The talk will reflect on what the case meant and ask whether hate-speech legislation assists tolerance and respect or whether the law increases conflict.
After the talk Hanifa Deen will launch her latest book “Ali Abdul v The King”.
“The Jihad Seminar” was short-listed for the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Literature Non-Fiction Award in 2008.
“A question of boundaries” will be held at the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies, Building 127, Ellery Crescent at 5pm on Thursday, July 28.
