From July 1 more than 25000 households are expected to receive an extra $131 per eligible household a year. The $12 million initiative was part of the Government’s 2011-12 Budget and will run over a four-year period to help ease the cost of living for vulnerable families.
Also receiving a boost are 3000 older Canberrans and people in wheelchairs who are physically unable to use buses, who, through the Government’s taxi subsidy scheme, can claim up to $34 off the cost of each trip. The Government has promised $2.6m from the 2011-12 Budget for the scheme over four years.
The Government also plans to invest part of the $2.6m in an electronic “smart card’-style TSS system to replace the current paper-based voucher arrangement.
