Bourke leads shop inquiry

THE select committee, which will lead the inquiry into the ACT Supermarket Competition policy, held its first meeting last night, electing Labor backbencher Dr Chris Bourke as chair.

The policy was under scrutiny after the Minister for Planning, Simon Corbell used his call-in power to approve the Giralang shops.

However, the call-in power will not be the subject of the inquiry while it’s before the Supreme Court.

The committee will review the operation of the policy as it interacts with the planning system. This will include: the appropriateness of settings as it applies to ACT Government direct sales, group centres and local centres; the impact of the policy on operators and consumers; impacts on the retail hierarchy; and future applications of planning and competition policies.

The committee, which also includes Opposition Leader Zed Seselja, elected Greens MLA Caroline Le Couteur deputy chair.

The committee are calling for written submission to its inquiry from organisation and inviduals, the closing date is Friday November 18.
