Breast-test reassurance

CHIEF Minister and Minister for Health Katy Gallagher says all breast screening provided by the ACT Government is undertaken by highly qualified health professionals using state-of-the-art digital mammography machines.

The comments come after concerns were raised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Cancer Council Australia and the Therapeutic Goods Administration who recently asked Australian women not to rely on unproven commercial breast imaging technologies to detect breast cancer.

“BreastScreen ACT is accredited by BreastScreen Australia, the national accrediting body providing a screening program available to women in the ACT who are aged between 50 and 69,” the Chief Minister said.

“The ACT service has three state-of-the-art digital mammography machines, with two machines located at 1 Moore Street, Canberra City and one at the Phillip Health Centre.

“The Canberra Hospital provides an assessment clinic where women who show symptoms such as a breast lump, have new breast pain or have had recent changes in the shape of their nipple or breast can come for further investigations.

“The assessment clinic also provides services to women who have had a previous breast cancer diagnosis or have an abnormality detected on their screening mammogram.”

The Cancer Council Western Australia also recently raised concerns that women may have been misled into believing certain commercial breast imaging technologies are as effective as mammography for early detection of cancer.
