Canberra’s Olympic hopefuls

CANBERRA’S Olympic hopefuls received a $100,000 boost from the ACT Government today – one year from the opening day of the London Olympic Games.

The funding includes $50,000 to local Olympic and Paralympic athletes to assist in preparations for the London Games. The remainder goes to the ACT Olympic Council.

Canberra has approximately 25 ACT Academy of Sport supported prospects for the Olympic games. Seven are striving to compete in the Paralympics and 18 for Olympics.

Of the prospects are paralympic hopefuls cyclist Sue Powell and shot putter Louise Ellery. Olympic hopefuls include, Glenn Turner of the Kookaburras, mountain bike champion Caroline Buchanan, cyclist Michael Mathews and Hockeyroos player Anna Flanagan.
