Car break-ins sweep south

AN INCREASED number of car break-ins in Tuggeranong has seen thousands of dollars worth of valuables stolen and police calling on the public to remove all valuables from cars.

From August 23 to September 7, 15 cars were broken into across Tuggeranong suburbs. Five of those cars belong to tradies, where equipment and tools totalling more than $17,000 was stolen. Items include generators, power tools, laser levels and battery kits.

Tuggeranong police station officer-in-charge, Sgt Rod Anderson said police believe the most recent thefts are opportunistic.

“The cars which have been broken into are parked outside of homes, not secured in garages, and items are clearly visible for anyone to see,” he said.

“These incidents are concerning to us, as the items stolen in this case directly affect people’s livelihood.”

“If you own a car, please ensure your valuables are removed and your car is secure.

“I would also like to ask the community to be on the look out for anyone offering tools and equipment for sale at cheap prices to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333000.”

And the police do nothing about it… my daughter’s new car was broken into on Monday 9th September in Calwell, her window had been shattered the full shattered piece of glass was place under her car and items were taken from her car (these items were in the glove box and not clearly visible from outside the car). We reported it only to be told no patrol would be sent and given a crime report number for insurance and that was the end of that according to the police. The car has a damage bill of over $1,000 with the replacement of the window and repair of the window frame.

Upon door knocking our neighbours to see if they had seen anything we discovered our neighbours have a CCTV camera set up due to having their cars broken into a few times so they checked this for us and they discovered a man (not a young kid) in their driveway at 3.30am on Monday looking through their car windows with a torch and and trying to open the doors before moving onto my daughter’s car. They then called the police that they had this piece of scum on camera and the police were not at all interested in coming to look at the footage. I and my family and friends are completely disgusted with the treatment of the ACT police who seem very happy to continue to let this low life wander the streets damaging and stealing other peoples hard earned property. I am completely appalled given we have this guy caught on camera and nothing will be done about it. It seems that we Canberrans can just walk around breaking into people’s cars without fear of being charged because the police don’t seem to care! I’m sure if I see this guy again and hit him with a baseball bat they would take notice!!!!
