Max masters the art of dribbling

ACTOR Max Cullen began his career as a painter and sculptor, before taking up acting and starring as Sam, an 80-year-old in Peter Ustinov’s “Photo Finish” at age 23.

Fifty years on, the Gunning-based artist is still playing old blokes, and is in the middle of filming Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” playing Owl Eyes.

Cullen describes latest solo exhibition as “a visual autobiography; sculptures made from worn-out old musical instruments and rustic junk collected over the years, as well as paintings big and small, that track a life’s journey across this great brown land.”

Never one to romanticise his art, he adds: “My latest technique is to dribble paint and see what happens — come to think of it, I dribbled once before, 70-odd years ago!  Is nothing new?”

Max Cullen exhibition, South Hill Gallery,  3 Garrorigang Road, Goulburn,  Fri: 12-5pm  Sat: 10am – 5pm  Sun: 10am – 4pm,  November 19 to December 4. Exhibition opening, 3-5pm, November 19. Inquiries 0411 131 515.
