Dinosaurs on the phone

To celebrate National Science Week 2011 (August 13-21 August), Scitech and the National Science Week team have partnered with iiNet to bring back the dinosaurs using “augmented reality” technology.

AR combines the real and the virtual; unlike virtual reality, which replaces the real world with a simulated one, augmented reality gives us a view of reality which has been tweaked, enhanced or augmented.

The event, dubbed “Jurassic Science Week” will see prehistoric creatures roaming through 14 Australian cities and towns including Canberra. Along with the usual suspects (Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops and Stegosaurus), Jurassic Science Week will bring dinosaurs such as Chungkingosaurus and Parasaurolophus back to life via people’s smartphones.

On top of helping to inspire imaginations (young and old), the nationwide experiment is aimed at highlighting how science can be innovative and fun.
