Flaws in mobile cap plans

mobile phone plansLeading comparison website WhistleOut has launched a new, independent analysis of mobile phone cap plans showing how Australia lags behind the UK and US in the publication of per minute pricing information for consumers and reveals what cap plans really offer in monthly minutes and data.

WhistleOut’s investigation comes after the Australian Communication and Media Authority signalled it is looking to reform the sector by implementing an equivalent to unit pricing in a report earlier this year.

“Unlike the US and UK, consumers in Australia would actually need to use a mathematical formula if they really want understand any of the marketing language used by the telcos in Australia. They’d need take the advertised value of, say, $500 of calls per month, and then divide this by flagfall costs, per minute pricing and other charges,” says WhistleOut.com.au director Cameron Craig.

“Until Australian mobile carriers adopt the minute-based pricing systems already used in the US and UK, it will be forever confusing to Australians.”

WhistleOut’s analysis reveals the best mobile plans are:

Mobile Phone Plans under $30 per month: Virgin’s $29 Big Cap offers the most minutes with 401 minutes available each month and 250 MB of data and new phones available.

Mobile Phone Plans under $30-$50 per month: Amaysim’s $39.90 Unlimited offers the most minutes and data with unlimited minutes each month and 4GB of data, but no new phones available.

Mobile Phone Plans under $50-$80 per month: Vodafone’s $65 Infinite Plan offers the most minutes with unlimited minutes each month and 2GB of data and new phones available.

Mobile Phone Plans over $80 per month: Vodafone’s $85 Infinite Plan offers the most minutes with unlimited minutes each month and 3GB of data and new phones available.

Consumers can compare all mobile phone plans in the market online at WhistleOut.com.au to see how they stack up against competitors and how they suit their personal needs. “Our tailored comparisons allow consumers to assess plans depending on their situation including visibility on the minutes they’d use on every plan, helping them make good buying decisions,” says Craig.
