THE ACT Government will now be allowed to make their own laws without the threat of intervention by Federal ministers.

The House of Representatives passed a Bill that amended the Territories Self-Government Legislation, removing the power of the Federal executive to overturn ACT legislation.

The Federal Government will now need the approval of both chambers to override legislation in the ACT and NT.

The Bill was passed by the Senate in August, with Senator Gary Humphries voting against the Bill.

Member for Fraser Andrew Leigh said the Bill acknowledges that ACT self-government is well established and has proven successful.

“This is testament to the hard work of successive ACT Governments who established the ACT Legislative Assembly as a mature forum for debate and discussion; the equal of any state government,” Mr Leigh said.
