Gifts to the homeless

Amy and Rosanne from the Department of Human Services' Social Work team, Louella from Gunyah Women's Housing in Queanbeyan, and Melissa from the Social Work team.

HUNDREDS of toiletries were donated to people in need across Canberra and Queanbeyan last week, to mark National Homeless Persons’ Week.

Staff from the Department of Human Services collected the items throughout the month for the cause. They also ran a raffle raising more than $2000 to purchase 40 swags through Street Swags, a not-for-profit organisation that produces durable bedding for homeless people across Australia.

“The generosity of staff surpassed our wildest expectations – we received hundreds of items such as hair brushes, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap and make-up items,” said Rosanne Nash from the Department’s Social Work Services.

“As a social worker, we recognise that often when people are in a crisis situation they only grab the bare minimum when they leave their homes.

“Everyday necessities like toiletries are often forgotten so we wanted to donate items which people could really use.”
Social Work Services delivered the donations on Friday to Canberra Fathers and Children Service, Blue Door, Tony’s Place and Gunyah Women’s Housing.
